Five Little Known Facts About Genital Warts

Genital warts are naturally in the category of topics that are not openly discussed in ‘polite society.’ Yet they are real, and thousands of people continue to suffer the condition quietly, as it is not something that can be shared openly. Myths about the condition abound, while some very basic facts about the condition remain unknown to many people who should know, especially patients who go through the vagaries of this distressing and ‘often awkward’ condition; and even medical practitioners who are expected to know much about the various medical conditions they are expected to treat on a day to day basis.

One of the little known facts about genital warts, perhaps as a result of the fact that they are so rarely (openly) discussed is that it is a very common condition indeed. In the United States for instance, it is estimated that a whopping 10 to 20 percent of the sexually active population have genital warts (although the condition only manifests clinically openly in 1 percent of these people); and you see that we are talking about a very common affliction indeed.

The second little known fact about genital warts is that the condition can be treated. While it is true that genital warts cannot be easily cured completely (by way of completely eliminating the virus that causes it), it is important to note that the severity of the condition and frequency of recurrences can be pushed down through the use of appropriate medications (and medical procedures for the more advanced cases); meaning that there is no reason for one to suffer genital warts in quietness assuming that the condition is untreatable. Treating and curing a condition are quite different terms, and not all conditions which are incurable are untreatable. Indeed, with recent advances in medical technology, although many conditions still remain incurable, very few are absolutely untreatable.

Another little known fact about genital warts is that it is actually a condition that one can get immunized against! Granted, the option of immunization against genital warts is as of now only open to women – who are also the people in whom genital warts tend to manifest most terribly – but still, many people imagine that genital warts has absolutely no vaccine. Of course, it is noteworthy that this vaccine is only effective before one gets infected with the condition –and better news is that Gardasil (the vaccine in question) can also reduce the chances of the person who takes it ever suffering from cervical cancer, a condition that used to kill millions of women before.

While genital warts are primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact, another little known fact about them is that they can also be spread non sexually. This leads people who happen to get afflicted of genital warts without any recent unprotected sexual contact to mistake them for other things, because they just can’t see how they could get genital warts without engaging in casual sex. The truth of the matter is that this highly contagious condition can be spread by something as simple as sharing personal effects (like towels) with a person who is afflicted of it: hence the need to avoid sharing such personal effects, especially keeping in mind the high prevalence of the condition mentioned earlier.
