Preparation for session of hot stone massage usually takes more than one hour. to save time, you need to ready the massage room before the start of the session. You must also check that the massage stones to be used in the session are already heated. Clean linens must also be set up in the massage table. You can also play a relaxing music during the massage session. After setting up all the necessary things needed for the session, you can now request the client to proceed to the massage room. You must give details of the hot stone massage to all your clients regardless if it’s their first time to receive a hot stone massage therapy. Below are the basic steps you need to perform during the session:

1. Table preparation

Put fresh linens on the massage table. You can put a lambswool under the bed sheet to make your clients feel more comfortable during the session. Eight flat stones with an average size must be lay down to the client’s back area. You need to arrange the stones by twos and each stone must have one to two inches in between.

2. Client’s position on the table

Request your client to rest in able for his back not to touch the massage stones. Stones must be place on each area of the back. Clients must also have the proper dress for the session.

3. Face of the client

You can start the massage by putting oil on the client’s face. Four stones in small sizes are needed. Put one stone on the forehead, another one under the lips and the remaining two on each cheek.

4. Front legs of the client

Next part to massage is the legs of the client. Uncover only one leg and start to massage the leg using oil. You need to choose what stones size to be used in massaging the leg of the client. Stone size will depend on the size of the client. Every part of the legs will then be massage using the selected stones. Ask your client what pressure to be put on. Once you are finished put a small stone on each toes of the client and cover the leg. Redo the procedure on the other leg and toes of the client.

5. Arms of the client

Uncover one arm of the client. Spread oil on the arm of the client and use your finger and palms to massage the arm with light and complete stroke. Flat stones with an average size can be used to massage the arm of the client. After massaging the arm, you can put a warm stone massage on the client’s palm. Redo the procedure on the other arm of the client.

6. Ask the client to turn over

You can now remove the stones you placed on the face of the client, on each toes and on the client’s palm. You can request your client to lie down on one side so you can easily remove the stones on the massage table.

Ensure that your client is covered properly when he is lying in front of you. Undrape the back of the client and massage it with oil using an effleurage stroke. After you finished in the client’s back area, put a stones on each of the area of the back. Put one stone on each side of the client’s shoulder. You must also place a stone on each scapular area of the client and one on the lower area of the client’s back. After this cover the back of the client and put a rounded medium sized stone on the palm of the client’s hand.

7. Back legs of the client

Uncover again one leg and put a medium or large stone under the buttock of the client. Put a stone on the back area of the knee and calf. Cover the leg and redo the procedure on the other leg of the client.

8. Scalp of the client

Massage the scalp of the client together with the client’s neck and shoulder.

9. Remove the stones

Un drape the back of the client and put away all the stones then drape it again. You also need to uncover the legs of the client and put away all the stones. After removing all the stones cover again the legs of the client.

10. Final Step

Massage the client’s back and leg using effleurage stroke over the cover. End the massage using only the tip of your fingers with a nerve stroke.
