Deep tissue massage is a type of massage or technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue and connective tissue. It uses some same strokes used in the classic Swedish massage but through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas and pressure is more intense than the classic. Generally deep tissue massage should not hurt, but it is likely to be more uncomfortable. At some points during the session, most people may find some discomfort, stiffness or pain. The pain should subside within a day or two if massage is done correctly.

Deep tissue massage is more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than exercise, physical therapy, chiropractic, prescription medications, diet, acupuncture, glucosamine and over the counter drugs base on the survey conducted. Corrective and therapeutic is what deep tissue massage is.

Adhesions are bands of painful stiff tissues that are usually present when there is injury or chronic muscle tension in the muscle, ligaments and even tendons. It causes a block in the circulation which causes pain, inflammation and limited muscle flexibility. To break down these adhesions, massage therapist applies deep pressure or friction to relived stiffness and restore normal muscle movement. This type of massage provides significant benefits for athletes, who are exposed to intensive training / conditioning, since the process will loosens muscles, reduce pain and increase flexibility. But you do not have to be an athlete to experience deep tissue massage.

This can be especially helpful for athletes who expose their muscles to daily, intensive conditioning. Deep tissue massage will noticeably loosen muscles, elevate pain, and increase mobility – all significant benefits for an athlete. However, you do not have to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of deep tissue massage.

This type of massage helps loosen muscle tissues, make blood and oxygen circulation properly and release toxins from the body. It is recommended to drinking a lot of water after the session to help eliminate the toxins.

Then again deep tissue massage focuses on specific concerns such as:

• Chronic pain
• Spasm or muscle tension
• Osteoarthritis pain
• Fibromyalgia
• Postural problems
• Recovery from injuries such as sports injury, whiplash etc.
• Limited mobility
• Repetitive strain injury such as carpal tunnel syndrome

Like any other massage, deep tissue massage should be performed carefully to those who:

• Have infectious skin disease
• Have rash or open wounds
• Just undergone surgery
• Just received chemotherapy or radiation (with doctors recommendation)
• Have Osteoporosis (people with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage)
• Are prone to blood clots (people with heart disease should consult their doctor prior getting this kind of massage)
• Are pregnant (pregnant women should check with their doctor if they are considering getting this type of massage.

Furthermore, deep tissue massage should not be done directly over inflames skin, bruises, tumors, unhealed wounds, recently fractured areas and abdominal hernia.
It is recommended to avoid eating heavy meal prior the massage session. It will also be ideal to arrive at the spa five to ten minutes earlier to fill out necessary forms and to relax before the session starts. During the deep tissue massage session you should expect that the massage therapists may use his / her knuckles, fingertips, hands, forearms and elbows. After the massage it is important to intake plenty of water to help eliminate or flush our toxins or metabolic waste from the body.
