Many people who need an extra boost of energy turn to energy drinks, soda, or coffee. The only thing wrong with all of these products is that they are absolutely full of caffeine and sugar. Yes, in the short term these ingredients will make you feel like you have more energy. However, most of the time you will experience a “crash”. This is when your body stops reacting favorably to all the sugar and caffeine and leaves you feeling more tired and worn out than before you took the energy drink, soda, or coffee.

A “crash” has never actually been recognized by scientists but any person who has experienced this feeling will tell you that it actually feels like your body is crashing. The reason for this is that the rapid rise in blood sugar leads to increased insulin production. At this point there is too much sugar for the body to actually use and the subsequent fall in glucose levels is what makes you feel the “crash”. The next paragraph will explain exactly how your body reacts to large amounts of sugar and caffeine.

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar, which is 100 of the recommended daily dose, hits the system. After 20 minutes, an insulin burst happens because of the significant spike in blood glucose. The liver turns the insulin into fat. After 40 minutes, the caffeine is completely absorbed. When this happens, your blood pressure rises, your pupils dilate, and your liver pushes more sugar into the bloodstream. At this point, drowsiness is prevented by the blockage of adenosine receptors in your brain. Another 5 minutes later, the dopamine production has been increased and the pleasure centers of the brain are being stimulated. After 1 hour, you get a boost in metabolism and the high doses of sugar increase the urinary excretion of calcium. Because of the diuretic properties in caffeine, you’ll have to urinate a lot. Through your urine, you’ll excrete calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, electrolytes, and water. Those nutrients could have helped build strong bones and teeth but now they have been washed away. Now, the rapid excitement that was going on inside your body is gone and you’re left with nothing except sluggishness and irritability.

There are a few things you can do to prevent this terrible “crash”. Drinking an energy drink before work or school can benefit you if you make sure you are taking the correct dose. Overdosing is what makes your body go nuts. Make sure you eat something with the drink. This way, your body can run on other things besides pure sugar and caffeine. A somewhat obvious preventative measure is to nurse one drink. Caffeine and sugar over a longer period of time will still give you a boost of energy without overloading your body.

Besides trying things to prevent a sugar or caffeine crash, you can choose a different supplement that is not completely packed with those ingredients. Trying something with natural ingredients like Bee Pollen, White American Ginseng, Cordyceps, and high protein Spirulina may give you the energy boost you need with no “crash”. Bee Energetic by Purium has these all natural ingredients and might just be the thing you need.
